CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholastic ability and response to an essay question. A point system will be used and weight will be given for scholastic achievement (GPA), honors and achievements, extracurricular involvement, and the essay response.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
A total application consists of two parts:
1. A completed formal application
2. An essay of 500 words or less addressing the scholarship essay topic:
Africa is a land filled with possibility due to its wealth of natural resources and unmatchable human potential. This potential however, is often overlooked due to the negative images of the Motherland that are perpetuated and reinforced through false perceptions.
How will you use your education to actively address the challenges to Africa's image and promote improved views of the continent and her people?
If selected as finalists, applicants will also be asked to submit a photo and biography to be published in AfriPro Houston's annual publication, The African.SELECTION PROCESS
A Scholarship Review Committee of AfriPRO Houston representatives will facilitate the selection of the 2010 recipients. Beforehand, they will create a scoring matrix giving relative weights to different factors regarding an applicant's application. They will then review the complete applications and select the top three candidates. If, in the opinion of the Committee, no applicant meets all the criteria, a recipient will not be selected.
The scholarship will be paid to the institution of higher learning which the recipient plans to attend or to the student directly if they furnish receipts for eligible academic expenses in excess of the scholarship amount. The recipient will be required to provide a copy of his/her transcript from their higher learning institution at the end of the academic year.
