The AfriPRO Houston Scholarship honors high school seniors and/or college students of African descent who attend or will attend accredited institutions of higher learning. The scholarship is merit and need based.

WHO MAY APPLY

* High school seniors of African descent planning to attend an accredited college or

* Undergraduate college students of African descent attending an accredited college

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholastic ability and response to an essay question. A point system will be used and weight will be given for scholastic achievement (GPA), honors and achievements, extracurricular involvement, and the essay response.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

A total application consists of two parts:

1. A completed formal application
2. An essay of 500 words or less addressing the scholarship essay topic:

According to africa2015.org, only 57% of African children are enrolled in primary education. How will your education help solve the educational crisis African children currently face?

Applicants will also be asked to submit a photo and biography if selected as finalists.

SELECTION PROCESS

A Scholarship Review Committee of AfriPRO Houston representatives will facilitate the selection of the 2009 recipients. Beforehand, they will create a scoring matrix giving relative weights to different factors regarding an applicants application. They will then review the complete applications and select the top three candidates. If, in the opinion of the Committee, no applicant meets all the criteria, a recipient will not be selected.

The scholarship will be paid to the institution of higher learning which the recipient plans to attend or to the student directly if they furnish receipts for eligible academic expenses in excess of the scholarship amount. The recipient will be required to provide a copy of his/her transcript from their higher learning institution at the end of the academic year.
